Why Mental Health Matters More Than Metrics

In our digital age, it's easy to get wrapped up in the numbers, likes, comments, followers, and shares but something I've learned along the way is that no amount of engagement is worth sacrificing your mental well-being for. As the saying goes:

"You can’t pour from an empty cup."

When you're running on empty, it doesn't just affect you, it impacts every single thing you do, including your business.

My Experience: From Personal to Business Social Media

Having both personal and business accounts has given me a perspective on how social media can be an amazing creative outlet, yet also a double-edged sword. I love scrolling through my personal feed, sharing pictures with friends, and watching everyone else’s daily lives. But let’s face it, for anyone growing up with social media, it's hard to ignore the pressures. We compare ourselves constantly, worrying that we don’t measure up to what we see online. And when you start your own business, that comparison doesn’t just stop, it actually intensifies. Now, it's not only about appearances, but also about competing to stay relevant, putting your best self forward, and meeting endless expectations.

The Overwhelm Is Real

Now, don’t get me wrong. I spend a LOT of time on social media—it's literally my job! But when it comes to posting for Inked Badger, it can sometimes feel a bit much. And you know what? That’s completely okay. You don’t have to be on all the time. If you’re feeling the weight, don’t be afraid to take a step back or ask for help. Social media is always there, but it’s not going to collapse if you take a break. I’m a firm believer that you can care about growth, but also care about yourself even more.

Authenticity Is Key

When you force yourself to post, thinking only about how many likes or comments it will get, that’s usually when it falls flat. People know when something isn’t genuine. I’ve found that posts showing a bit of my real self, the fun little insights into my daily life or a quick chat about things I love, tend to reach people in a way that scripted or overly-polished content doesn’t. People crave authenticity, and ironically, the raw, real stuff gets more engagement than when I’m overthinking it.

The Best Mindset Shift

When I started Inked Badger, all I wanted was likes, followers, the whole works. But I realised that those numbers aren’t what keep you grounded. The right people, the ones who truly enjoy and need your work, will find you. And it’s way better to grow with people who get it than to chase numbers. Your audience’s quality is far more valuable than the quantity. So if you’re stressing over those follower counts, try switching your mindset to focusing on the people who are already supporting you. That has honestly been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Why the Myth of “Big Numbers = Success” Is Just That… a Myth

Here’s the biggest misconception about social media: it’s not all about the followers, likes, or shares. You could have 20 dedicated followers who support you consistently, and those 20 people could each become clients. In comparison, someone else with 500 followers may still have only those same 20 people interacting meaningfully with them. It’s about building a community that cares, not just having numbers for the sake of it.

Staying Grounded with Socials

I’ve had posts that don’t get the traction I hoped for, and that’s okay! The people who need to see my tips and tricks are the ones who reach out, and that’s what matters. It’s about impacting the right people rather than catering to everyone. The quality of your content and how it helps others should always be the primary focus.

My Tips for Keeping Socials Balanced

  • Set boundaries: Don’t let social media consume your day. Log out, set your hours, and try not to obsess over notifications.

  • Remember, it’s a tool, not your entire life: Try scheduling your posts and treating your platforms like a digital work tool. Put a do not disturb on after hours and give yourself time to unwind.

  • Focus on organic growth: The right people will find you over time. If you’re consistently showing up and being you, it’ll happen without the pressure to post just for the sake of it.

Don’t Panic Over Perfection

To anyone just starting out or feeling anxious about their growth on socials, here’s a bit of advice: don’t panic, and don’t force it. You’ll find your rhythm, and the audience you need will find you. If you miss a post one week, it’s not the end of the world. Focus on the ones who are already there and nurture those relationships.

Mental Health > Social Media

Finding that balance between a healthy mind and a healthy business presence isn’t always easy, but your mental health is absolutely more important than metrics. Put your phone down, give yourself permission to take breaks, and remember;

Social media is just one piece of your world.

You are so much more than a number on a screen, and in the long run, taking care of yourself will take care of your business, too.

PS: I’m always here for a chat if you need advice or just someone to talk through social media stresses.
